Sheraton Trophy

Engraved, ‘HMS Sheraton Trophy for The Best All-Round Sports Person of the Year’

The Sheraton Trophy takes its name from HMS Sheraton, which was awarded the Freedom of the Borough in recognition of support.

The Royal Navy minehunter HMS Sheraton was visiting Fleetwood in November 1977 when a severe storm caused major flooding, and the ship’s crew provided crucial support to the local community during the emergency.

Emergency Response: The crew of HMS Sheraton actively participated in the relief efforts after the storm surge on November 11/12, 1977, breached sea defences and flooded large areas of Fleetwood, Cleveleys, and Pilling Moss.

Civic Recognition: In recognition of this significant support, the ship was later awarded the Freedom of the Borough. This is one of the highest honours a local authority can grant a military unit, symbolising the strong bond formed during the crisis.

Lasting Legacy: The ship’s contribution is permanently remembered in the area through the annual Sheraton Trophy, which is awarded by Wyre Council to an inspirational young person who has made a difference in their community, reflecting the spirit of service shown by the ship’s crew.

The 1977 flood led to the construction of improved sea defences in the following years, given to Fleetwood by the crew during the 1977 flood emergency when the ship was visiting the port. The Royal Navy minehunter HMS Sheraton was visiting Fleetwood in November 1977 when a severe storm caused major flooding, and the ship’s crew provided crucial support to the local community during the emergency.
