Ceremonial Trowel

Presented to Councillor J.R Rowbotham, Chairman of Thornton Cleveleys Urban District Council, on the occasion of the laying of the foundation of the new Promenade on 17th September 1927. Mr Henry Fenton, Surveyor to the Council. The new promenade was completed in Cleveleys in 1927, and its history includes a foundation stone that held a time capsule. This was opened in 2005, though it was found to be empty. Reportedly, the time capsule contents would have included promotional posters of Thornton Cleveleys, town planning maps, and newspapers of the day. It had apparently been opened in the 1980s after the monument had been moved and re-sited.
