Local councils received these items as a formal acknowledgment and personal thankyou from HM King Charles III  in response to the official books of condolence and messages of sympathy sent by local authorities on behalf of their communities following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

During the national period of mourning, local councils (including county, district, town, and parish councils) facilitated public grieving by providing official local Books of Condolence and writing formal letters of sympathy to the new monarch.

Buckingham Palace coordinated a widespread response to the thousands of organizations, local authorities, and community groups that submitted tributes.

The reply included a printed message of appreciation signed by Charles R and a personal photograph featuring a young Prince Charles with his mother, Queen Elizabeth II as a gesture of comfort and historical record.

The personal message from King Charles III reads, ‘ It was so very kind of you to send me such a wonderfully generous message following the death of my beloved mother”
